Shadow Play
Hi! So I thought that I'd start a blog to accompany my poetry books that I've created to give a behind-the-scenes look at how I made the poems and what inspired them. I'm also using this as a means to promote future books that I create (Hint: there could be one next year).
I wanted to start off by introducing my book, "Shadow Play."
"Shadow Play" is my third poetry book I've written and self-published. The title took me forever to come up with. I knew I had a black-and-white theme going throughout the entire book so I wanted to call it something that played on this sort of imagery that I was using. I played with themes from film noir to black-and-white animals to symbols of duality to the dichotomy of good versus evil within oneself.
I was also inspired by a poetry book that I discovered in college by William Blake called "Songs of Innocence and of Experience." I'll talk more about this next week as I talk about my first poem.
The photos in my book were taken by my good friend, Nova. I met him in college and he was the absolute best to work with. I also got some help with some photos from my friend, Ashley. A lot of them were taken at Discovery Green and in East End. I like to use photos as visual representations of my work. In the future, I'd like to actually include artwork besides photography.
How is this book different from the first two? "Into the Eye," my first book, was a trial-and-error for me. It was an introduction to my life and I wrote it during Hurricane Harvey in less than two weeks. It was fast-paced and anxious, a catalyst for what became a burning desire to turn my life into poetry. My second book was about heartbreak. "I Am Scorpio" was about a year that I thought would nearly destroy me. I was trying to make sense of multiple failed relationships and pain, so I created "Scorpio" as a defense mechanism to justify my actions for how I chose to deal with my situations.
If "Into the Eye" was about what made me, and "I Am Scorpio" was about what broke me, then "Shadow Play" had to be about what opened my eyes to real change in my life. It was through this book that I learned so much about myself, my struggles, my need for improvement in my life.
For the months to come, I will dive into each individual poem and analyze for meaning and interpretation. I'm hoping to release a new blog post every Sunday. Once I finish breaking down each poem, I will work to promote my fourth book, which I'm super excited about, as I've been planning it for the past month now. Hopefully it will be finished and out by next October since I need to live a little more life to write about...
Thanks for reading!
